Line markings for workshops and warehouses in Sydney

Line markings can also be used for workshop and warehouse situations too. When working or visiting a workshop or warehouse, you may be sharing the environment with forklifts, trucks or cars. You want the areas marked out quite clearly where pedestrians are to walk safely and go about their business as well as where vehicles should operate and stay within and what areas they need to stay out of.

In a workshop or warehouse situation, we can also use line marking to mark out different packing bays, parking bays, loading bays and anything else that will make your work zone more efficient and productive.

Things to consider before hiring commercial painters Northern Beaches

Are you thinking about making some updates to your commercial property in Northern Beaches, Sydney? You may be thinking about getting the painters in if you are between tenants and want to improve your chances of leasing the property. Or have you taken on a new tenant and it’s been a part of the negotiations/lease agreement or are you the owner/occupier of the property and are updating your branding and want to take it a step further to the exterior of the building as well. So, engaging painters that service Northern Beaches or where you are located to improve the exterior of your property can add:

  • Value
  • Style
  • Appeal
  • Confidence

All of which is a benefit for the owner of the property and the business that operates out of the building. Just make sure you use qualified and fully insured painters that have experience in commercial painting as depending on the size of the building and logistics there are a lot of areas to manage.

Why you should engage commercial painters for your Northern Beaches property

We’ve all done it before and judged a book by its cover and people do it with buildings and businesses too. So how the exterior or your commercial building presents will be the first impression of potential tenants and clients. If the building looks cruddy and has peeling and chipped paint are you going to want to lease the property or do business in that building? I think not! So, jazz up the outside and get the painters in to present the property at its best. It’s amazing how much a coat of paint and a change of colour if you wish can change the look and appeal of a property.

If you already have a tenant though and are wishing to spruce up the interior and exterior of the property and they are a long-term tenant then consult with them as to what your plans are with the timeframe and colour. If the tenant is trying to present a particular look with their business what you do with the colour can have a big impact in some instances. For example, if your tenant is a beauty salon and they’re presenting a holistic, calm, warm and inviting presence and you turn around a paint the exterior of the building a gunmetal grey as you can see below the colours have a completely different vibe and appeal. The darker colour isn’t inviting. It’s not warm and welcoming and is quite the opposite of what a beauty salon is generally trying to do.

The example above is what a business presenting a calm, warm and inviting presence entails.

Then the example below shows how a dark exterior gives a totally different impression and vibe and would not suit that calm, relaxing serene beauty salon.

Colour can make a big impact when painting the exterior of your commercial property

As we said above and showed you with the two images. Colour can have a big impact on your tenants and how their business is portrayed. So please consult with your tenant if you already have one. We would also recommend having your painters stick to more neutral colours and then your tenants can make any changes if they wish or accessorise when it comes to the interior.

If you are looking at going down the route of the changing the colour of the exterior of your property then also consider the styles and colours of the surrounding buildings and businesses too. If your building is quite close to other businesses and you are in quite a conservative area and you turn around and paint your building canary yellow for example then you might find you’re the talk of the town and not for the right reasons. Although they do say all publicity is good publicity so depending on what you are trying to achieve you may have hit the nail on the head and it could be a cost-effective marketing ploy or gimmick.

Normally when it comes to painting a commercial property our clients choose neutral colours for our painters to use rather than what’s “in style.” Any other colour choices are left to the tenants to make and then rectify back to the original state should they move on at a later time.

Top 5 tips on how to proceed with your commercial painting

There’s a lot to consider and take into account when engaging painters for your commercial property so here’s the 5 main points:

  1. Ensure you use a company that has experience and all the relevant licenses and insurances like Summit Coatings.
  2. Engage painters that are a part of the Master Painters Australia Association. That way you can rest assured you are using a reputable company and will get a quality job to match.
  3. If you have tenants in the property then speak to them. Discuss with them what aspects will disrupt them, is the painting able to be completed on days or a holiday period that they are closed (remember a happy tenant pays their rent on time).
  4. If you have a long-term tenant or occupy the building yourself then take the business and their branding into account along with the surrounding area and businesses. Like we said don’t paint your building canary yellow in a conservative area unless causing a stir is a part of your plan.
  5. Also, make sure you check or that the painters do as to whether you have any restrictions on your property. If it’s heritage listed or the like then there can be quite strict restrictions and guidelines you must follow and plans need to be approved before work is undertaken too.

Now if you are located in the areas that we service of Northern Beaches or North Shore Sydney then contact us here at Summit Coatings when you are ready for a quote. We would be more than happy to assist you with any of your painting needs.

What to consider when hiring a commercial painter?

Are you new to owning a commercial property or haven’t had to have your property painted before? Here are the top 5 things to consider when choosing your commercial painter:

  1. Insurance – public liability and workers compensation
  2. Licensed
  3. Master painter – not a necessity but definitely an added bonus
  4. Experienced team of commercial painters
  5. Professional leadership

Ask your commercial painter for a copy of their insurance certificates of currency. Any painting contractor worth their weight should be happy to provide them and if not find another. This is an area you never want to be unsure or uncertain of.

An experienced commercial painter will also be able to discuss with you, your business circumstances and determine the best time to undergo the work based on:

  • Off peak season  – if your business has a period that isn’t as busy as normal, closes for anytime throughout the year for holidays or has skeleton staff for any period then that can be a great opportunity for us to come in and undertake work
  • Weather – if the painting is external then we will also need to consider the time of the year along with the size of the job
  • Logistics – if there is anything else going on around the property which may hinder us accessing the property? This is extremely important when it comes to external painting as we also need to consider scaffolding access and what’s involved in having this erected and dismantled.

Ask about their previous commercial jobs in Sydney

Always ask about the background of the company and previous jobs they have done in the same or similar area. Discuss how they foresee the job running in relation to:

  • Timeframe
  • Number of painters required
  • Access to the premises
  • How the business in the premises will operate with the painters

Google is always a good place to start the search for a reputable commercial painter. Just Google the company name and you might be amazed at how much information you can find including reviews and feedback from past customers.

Can you really trust online review sites?

Being in the painting game for over 30 years, we’ve lost count of how many happy clients we’ve completed work for. Whether it’s a residential home, commercial space or strata complex, our aim is always to ensure the best result for our customers (even if that means going above and beyond the usual call of duty).

A recent development since the dawn of this wonderful technology called “the internet” is the possibility for customers to share their experiences with a company – good or bad. Previously, if a customer had positive or negative feedback about a business, they could generally share it with a close circle of friends and the buck stopped there. Now we all have the potential to share our reviews to anyone interested in finding the information – be it locally, nationally or even globally!

Whilst it’s great that our happy customers can sing praises of Summit to a much larger audience, it also means addressing some of those not-so-happy customers who, regardless of what effort you’ve gone to keep them happy, simply can’t be pleased. And quite often, it’s these customers that like to take to the internet to share their frustrations (warranted or not). What’s more, there are cases of competitor businesses using these wonderful review platforms to slander businesses, in the hope of gaining deflective business.

This begs the question, can you really trust online review sites? We’ve put together a few top tips to help you decipher online reviews of trade contractors.

Check for a name

Many online review sites, such as Yelp, require reviewers to use their legal full name. This hopes to weed out fake reviews vs legitimate ones. If you’re using online research to determine whether to hire a contractor or not, make sure the review you’re reading use a real name (not an alias, or a nickname).

Has the business replied?

If there was a negative review, what has the company done to address the issue? As with all things in life, sometimes things go wrong. The key to finding a good trade contractor is seeing what they do to rectify a negative experience. Often all it might take is a 1 hour visit to the site and the problem can be fixed!

Majority Rules

Whilst it would be great to have a 100% positive feedback history, we know it might not be realistic to keep every single person happy. For example, as strata painters, we don’t just consider our client to be the strata manager or the members of the executive committee, but every single resident and owner in the complex. And when we’re working on multi-storey apartment blocks with over 100 units, that can get tricky! We’ve had reviews from strata residents in the past who we didn’t even know existed until their review popped up and diminished our 100% positive score – the issue was of course dealt with but it goes to show the power of online reviews! As a rule, if the majority of reviews about a trade contractor are positive and you’re dealings with them so far are favourable, don’t let one or two bad reviews change your mind.

As trade contractors, we’re not saying that every negative review is false or should be disregarded – we know there are many businesses which deserve the negative review they’re given, however the trick to deciphering these online review sites is to look at a few elements to determine how legitimate each review is and of course to trust your own instincts!

3 Tips to make your dark commercial space feel lighter

The feeling of light in a space affects not just the look of a room, but the feel as well. Most of us spend the majority of our day inside at our place of work, and the availability of natural light is often scarce.

It’s a challenge when designing dark commercial spaces, with most people preferring to work with an abundance of natural light. Commercial spaces often have limited windows, large floors filled with wall dividers, average lighting and poor design all round. It’s been popular to house your office is a converted space of another kind (we’re thinking warehouse), but these spaces were never considered as places to need for more light.

So as commercial painters and decorators in Sydney, we asked ourselves what can be done to make dark commercial spaces feel brighter? We’ve all heard of the studies which show the psychological effects of a lack of light (including depression, and being prone to distraction etc.), so what are some easy factors to consider to add extra light to your dark commercial space?

Here’s our top 3:

Choosing the right paint colour

Choosing a paint colour that enhances natural light is the best and quickest way to brighten up those dark spaces. As Sydney commercial painters, we’ve seen firsthand what an amazing difference using an off white can achieve, as opposed to darker, bolder colours. Whiter, lighter shades are fantastic for use in a commercial space, as they are neutral, don’t date (longevity), and can make a space feel bigger and more airy. If you’re intent on using colour in your commercial space, either try to limit to a feature wall, or use pale shades of colour to still achieve that bright feel.

Choosing the right paint type

Whilst choosing a lighter colour is an obvious choice, selecting the right paint type is often something only professional commercial decorators, will consider. Colour isn’t the only variant in paint; there’s also the base to consider (oil or water), and more importantly, the sheen. How much sheen is in a paint will affect how glossy the finished surfaces appear.

Low sheen paint is great for covering imperfect walls (as it tends to hide those lumps and bumps), or for deep coloured walls of which the effect is rich, textured tones. However, low sheen isn’t great for durability or light reflection.

We recommend really amping up the sheen in your paint to increase the light in the space. It doesn’t need to be super glossy, just enough to allow your walls to reflect that little bit more light. Consider using a semi-gloss if you’re not committed to staring at shiny walls for the next 5-10 years. The benefits of a higher-sheen paint is that your walls will also survive more wear and tear with the ability to be wiped clean, as opposed to its low sheen counterpart which can need some maintenance love from your favourite commercial painters in Sydney.

Clever Decor

Using a commercial painter to update your Sydney office isn’t the only solution to making your commercial space seem lighter and brighter – some strategic decor choices can also make a considerable difference. We’ve seen how the right materials in the right place can really change the feel of a space. Our favourite tip is placing mirrors (the bigger the better) in opposition to windows to reflect even more light. It will also make the room feel larger if space is something you’re fighting against.

As commercial decorators, we suggest using white and bright desks, cubicle panels and office furniture which also help achieve a feeling of brightness in your space. Just make sure to break up the “whiteness” with some pops of colour here and there. Think coloured desk accessories, accent chairs in the waiting room or floor coverings. Coolest office spaces of 2015

This week we’ve been looking to some of the world’s coolest office spaces for some design and colour inspiration. And let’s just say we’re getting some serious workplace envy! Whilst most of the following offices obviously belong to big business corporations, we’ve also snuck in a smaller enterprise who knows how to maximise a mini budget for maximum affect.

The 3 Coolest office spaces are:

Beats Electronics, Los Angeles

Located in Los Angeles USA, the Beats Electronics office has taken colour blocking to the next level. We love seeing colour being used as a central design feature and this is a perfect example of what happens when it’s done right. In this office, the company has utilised a skilled commercial painter who has leveraged their brand colour palette, and offset against natural wood tones and some greenery.

Coolest office space - beats

Barbara Bestor, architect of the office explains how the colours have also been used with colour psychology in mind. The large blue space is designed to create a feeling of calm and peacefulness, whilst the smaller red zones evokes a sense of concentrated energy. “The colours help create distinct locations” (Bestor, Inc.com: 2015).

Coolest office space - beats

The inclusion of high windows means natural light can also soften the boldness of wall to ceiling (and furniture) colour. Allowing strong natural light can also help improve overall employee wellbeing and productivity. What’s not to love?! This is definitely one of the coolest office spaces we’ve seen!

Google, Tel Aviv

Many might consider Google as the pioneer in “coolest office spaces”, and they’re not retiring any time soon. Their local headquarters in Tel Aviv showcase how tradition can be incorporated into a modern office.

Coolest office space - tel aviv

The concept behind this hi-rise office was to reference the culture different on each floor. The focus in this first image is obviously throwing back to the cultural identity of Israel, whilst creating usable spaces for employees to breakout. Here the focus is not so much on commercial branding and colour, but texture. The use of a vertical (and upside down) garden alongside a cobbled path evokes a feeling of being outside in “old town”.

Coolest office space - tel aviv

In the second image there is a clear distinction from the first, with bright lights, a neon colour palette and the visual creation of a sandy beach. Using colours and textures to create a playful space is nothing new to commercial painters in Sydney, like Summit. However, Google have gone the next level with its fit out to really commit to the beach scene, even including a water slide!

Men at Work Communications, Sydney

Local PR firm Men at Work Communications located in trendy Chippendale shows how a small business can still create an office space which oozes “cool”. The office is a collaborative project from all the members of staff to create a space where they want to be.

Coolest office space - men at work

Using our “painter” eyes, the first thing we notice is the need for a blank canvas for a space like this to really take shape. The stark white walls (whilst generally unnoticed) are what creates a cohesive feel to the otherwise pastiche of colours, images and furniture pieces. White is also a colour which rarely dates and always looks fresh. For more about what colours are on trend this year, don’t forget to check out our free e-book.

Coolest office space - men at work

Using white walls as the blank canvas also injects a feeling of bright airiness which is enhanced by the large scale windows and high ceilings. The focus of this office is obviously to make those within it feel at home and able to put their personal touch on the space.

If you’re feeling inspired after seeing these cool offices the way we were, and your office or commercial space is in need of a commercial paint, contact Summit Coatings for an obligation free quote. We can have you on your way to your very own cool office space in no time at all!

What colour should I paint my office?

First impressions count. At no time is this more true than in business. It’s why you’ve spent time and resources ensuring your brand logo is right, your website is easy to navigate and your advertising gets results.

Whilst you’re definitely on the right track to making your business stand out, don’t stop there. It’s just as important to get your office space right, choosing the right office paint colours to inspire both clients and employees alike!

You might think that all offices are pretty much the same; white walls, black computer screens, laminate desks and paper. Everywhere. Just so much paper.

But it’s time to wake up and smell the paint colour.

Just like you style your home to be a reflection of those who live there, your office is where you and your employees spend most of your days working towards shared goals. It’s also a reflection of a company’s culture – and don’t you want your clients to see you as professional, confident and organised? As we offer commercial painting services in Sydney, we are qualified to offer a few ideas for how to improve your space and choose the right paint colours for your office to complement your brand and space.

The entrance

It’s the first thing you see in the morning and the last area you see at night, it’s also the first area your clients see. Firstly, it’s important to ensure your office is easy to find and that your signage is professional and brand aligned. The next step is to ensure that when your clients enter your office, there’s no mistaking where they are! Adding a branded door mat is one easy solution to continue your branding inside; so is leveraging your brand colour into corporate office paint colour ideas. If your brand colours are too strong and not ideal for the psychology of the office space – consider a feature rug in your brands’ colours, some accent cushions on the waiting sofa, or perhaps let our painting service coat a piece of furniture in the exact shade of your company branding etc.

Meeting/breakout areas

To really impress your clients, pay attention to the meeting room. It’s generally the place where clients will spend most of their time (and we know how long meetings can sometimes roll out). If you are looking to step into colour in the workplace, try coloured furniture accents, floor coverings and window furnishings. It’s an easy solution to break away from the standard white boardroom walls by licking a coat of paint over them for impact. Consider using aspects of your branding or logo here in lieu of something too strong that won’t complement concentration. Hue’s and saturation should be considered.

The bathrooms

Everyone needs to use the bathrooms at work, employees and clients alike, so don’t forget about this space. Whilst the priority here is hygiene and cleanliness and ease of maintenance, it doesn’t hurt to add some extra touches. Incorporate your office paint colours into this environment with accessories like soap dispensers and a scented diffuser. Studies show there are a number of different smells which can improve moods. And don’t just buy the cheap soap, but something more hydrating. Consider adding a “freshen up” bar, including items such as hand creams and breath fresheners. Also, try a piece of art on the walls to add some character.

Music

Whilst some workplaces have a good reason for not playing music, most don’t. It’s a fact that music increases work productivity, helps employees stay focused and generally improves office morale (just like choosing the right paint colours for your office). Music also assists in making visiting clients or suppliers feel more at ease. At Summits own office, we’ve seen the difference music can make to our workplace. Just think what you would prefer: sit in a waiting room with a background track of calming jazz sounds, or dead silence? Even soothing nature music can work in the right space. Just avoid anything too aggressive or repetitive. Also avoid the radio unless it’s a noisy environment, the ads and talkback time can be really difficult to think to.

Can a commercial painter improve productivity?

At one level or another, we are all aware that the colours on our walls can affect our moods. With this principle in mind, can we use colour to increase productivity at work? As a commercial painting company, we definitely believe colour can be leveraged to improve the workday, and have had great feedback regarding the change in the work environment once a space has been transformed.

So let’s start with the big 4 in the commercial business world: blue, yellow, red and green!

Blue

Blues are known to evoke a sense of calm and serenity. It helps you think clearly and therefore might be considered the most productive colour for your place of work. Blues are perfect for offices where a lot of “brain work” comes in to play. Think accountants, strategists and administration workers. Red

Red is a very strong colour, which makes it the ideal colour choice for all those physical workplaces. Red represents strength and stimulus – perfect for when you need to push yourself physically. It’s not suited to every corporate environment, though can be used as a highlight to support other monochromatic or neutral choices to emphasise branding. Red is perfect for warehouses and factories – where physical strength is paramount.

Green

Greens have a balancing effect, which make them perfect for point of sale businesses and anywhere that monetary transactions might take place. Retail stores, front offices and wherever a till is located can gain the full benefits of this colour. The customers that use our commercial painting services Sydney have told us that greens evoke a sense of reassurance and calmness, allowing customers to feel safe and trusting. We all want trusting customers, so maybe greens the right choice for your transaction business?

Additional Notes on commercial colour selection

Now that we’ve covered a few of the key colours perfect for commercial locations, don’t forget to consider the shade of colour – particularly the saturation. High saturated colours (bright blues, reds, greens, yellows) evoke a stronger effect than their low-saturated counterparts. The benefit of commercial environments is that they allow you to explore brighter colours than in a residential home, so have some fun with it!
